Parco Regionale del Serio (Seriate), Italy
June 2005
I was unemployed and was looking to use my time more positively. The opportunity to work and make a contribution to a project abroad also appealed.
Our job was to do clearing, cleaning and maintenance of a public park and riverside. Time and numbers allowed us to make a noticeable improvement.
The camp-coordinators couldn’t have been better. Fantastic leadership and hospitality led to strong integration between all volunteers. Our strong camp community worked hard and mixed well at all other times. Everybody played to their strengths. We were looked after by an hospitable local community who appreciated the efforts of the volunteers.
We explored the surrounding areas when we were not working and trips to Milan, Venice and the lakes were organised by the camp leaders.
We stayed in a large tent in the park and had access to an outdoor shower and to a bathroom nearby. Most meals were provided by the family of Mauricio, one of the camp leaders, otherwise we cooked ourselves. We also had a couple of nights out at local bars and dined out with local people on several occasions.
From my point of view everything from VAP’s and Legambiente’s side surpassed my expectations. I couldn’t possibly find fault with either organisation. I appreciate that constructive criticism may be more useful to you than praise but I honestly have no gripes that I could possibly mention. I can only thank you for the experience that I really enjoyed and will undoubtedly follow-up in the coming year.
