FFN are going to host an international work camp for the first time in the summer of 2014 in this Shree Radha Krishana senior citizen residence home in Lekhnath Kaski in collaboration with local representatives. The elders home has a very limited staff and budget and furthermore is sometimes unable to care for its 40 guests (some of which lost their family during the civil war or for other reasons). Volunteering at the elders home is therefore very much needed to help the elderly play games, to facilitate cultural exchanges, and to arrange field trips. During the stay, we also build and maintain different facilities at the Shree Radha Krishana senior citizen residence home.
Work:
The elderly at the home are far from family; international volunteers will help provide some level of distraction, caring and warmth. The volunteer will take care of the elders in home, play with them, teach them sports, music, and help them get ready for entertainment with volunteers. Volunteers in the Elders home have the opportunity to enrich these Adults’ lives by discussing social issues with them, and by exercising their social skills through friendly interaction. Aside from the interaction with the elderly in the home, there is an opportunity to greatly improve on the home’s surrounding environment by planting trees. Also, if time permits, there is an opportunity to improve the landscaping around the home as well.
Location:
The Elders home is situated on a hill 25 kilometers before the lakeside in Pokhara city. It is situated at an altitude of 827 meters. It is 200 km west of the Kathmandu valley and is a remarkable place of natural beauty, as well as stunning panoramic views Annapurna and fishtail of the Himalayan peaks. There are several adventurous activities going on everyday around the Pokhara Valley, such as boating on the lake, rock climbing, paragliding, rafting in the Seti river, and sightseeing in Pokhara.
Accommodation:
Food and accommodation will be arranged in the elders house. The elders house has space to accommodate up to 15 volunteers. A (cold) shower will be available at the Elders home, but not to the standard of your country. You will be served Dal Bhat (a soup of lentil or beans with boiled rice) and Tarkari (cooked vegetables) by the camp leader. This is the staple diet of the Nepalese and most Nepalese people eat it every day. The camp leader will also try to offer some different foods but if you would like to enjoy your native meals, please bring necessary materials. We all take part in the daily routines, so the volunteers will help to prepare meals in turn.
Meeting Point:
Friendship Foundation Nepal (FFN) office or Hotel cascade lazimpat Kathmandu Nepal We are sorry to mention that we can't pick up all volunteers at the airport due to entrance difficulties at the arrival of Tribhuvan International airport in Kathmandu. If volunteers stay at least one or two day at Hotel cascade lazimpat Kathmandu Nepal, the hotel will arrange for pick-up at the airport for a nominal fee (Rs 1300, Euros10). Volunteers are thus requested to send FFN their flight arrival information to so that we can arrange for your pick-up at the airport with Hotel cascade lazimpat Kathmandu Nepal. « I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
