This is a tri-lateral project between SJ France, YAP-CFD Germany and VAP.
Project:
Calais is the main point for refugees and asylum seekers to cross the Channel to England. They come mainly from countries at war, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea, Sudan, etc. No accommodation place exists for them, and they stay in the woods around the city, or they squat some abandoned buildings.
For 6 years, the local organisation SALAM has provided material support to them (food, clothes), but also denounced their situation (lack of accommodation, difficulties to access caring facilities, harrassment by the police, disrespect of their fundamental rights).
Work:
The workcamp will consist in some manual work at SALAM's (renovation, painting), preparing and serving the evening meal, and contact and dialogue with the migrants.
« The organisation of the camp community was fantastic! The group was great and we bonded quickly, language was always going to be a tricky one, but everyone attempted English and Indonesian so it made the whole experience fun and educational. »
