Fundación Proyecto Ecológico Chiriboga - Ecuador
Fundación Proyecto Ecológico Chiriboga is a brand new partner organisationof VAP in Ecuador.
Fundación Proyecto Ecológico Chiriboga is a Non Governmental Organisation that feels a responsibility in the protection of what remains of the west mountainous forest of
the Andes in the Pichincha province. FPEC is now protecting 300Ha of the primary forest and has as an objective the reforestation and recuperation of 10.000Ha. of forest in the west flank of the Andes of the Pichincha province (from 1300 to 2300 metres high).
Deforestation is very high in Ecuador particularly in this region because the tree felling is the only form of work for the people in this area.
Proyecto Chiriboga, together with five local communities and thanks to the help of international volunteers, has reforested in the Canton Chillanes, 350km south from Quito, an area with approximately 10.000 native trees and now is interested in making a sustainable management of the forest. It is necessary to make an inventory of the fauna and flora that exist in the area of the project.
Currently FPEC works in three programmes in three regions of Ecuador, which are involved in the areas of community development, conservation and restoration of the forest (mainly the cloudy and mountainous forest) and recently environmental education. This last is one of our principal aims, as due to the economic crisis of Ecuador, we think that nature needs to be protected by the people and only education can teach how to do it now and in the future.
