FUNCEDESCRI leads training sessions and workshops within our partner communities in order to help empower families to achieve food security and food sovereignty. We work with our families to create comprehensive farms that include family gardens, farm animals, the use of organic fertilizers, a composting latrine, water filtration systems, etc. Volunteers who come to Nebaj would be able to help us with establishing different components of the comprehensive farm model within our communities and at the center in Nebaj. This could include creating live plant fences for gardens, collecting seeds for the seed bank, maintenance work at the center, planting medicinal plants, and painting the center. Volunteers will also become familiar with the cultivation techniques and nutritive properties of amaranth. Amaranth is a basic grain that is very rich in fiber, protein, and calories. We promote its consumption and sale on a local level to help combat malnutrition in our partner communities.

This year, FUNCEDESCRI is hoping to revitalize our headquarters in San Lucas Sacatepéquez. We would love for the center to serve as a hub for learning and sharing about sustainable agriculture, health and nutrition, and appropriate technology use. In order to prepare the center to serve as a dynamic educational facility, much preparation is needed. Volunteers that come to San Lucas will be able to help with maintenance around the center as well as implementing components of a comprehensive farm and different appropriate technologies that we would like to use for training sessions. This work could include painting buildings, planting herbs, vegetables, and fruits, creating organic fertilizers, constructing pathways and fences, and building composting latrines.

On discovering VAP I found a number of workcamps in Kenya and at far more affordable prices than any 'volunteer abroad' organisations. I chose a 6 week workcamp based at a secondary school in western Kenya... »
