The city of Novo Airão, located on the Black River basin in the Central Amazon, has a rich biodiversity protected by Parks and Nature Reserves. Still, the proximity of the main city in the state (Manaus), easy access by road and lack of awareness of many Airão Novo citizens make this city a focus of socio-environmental degradation and deforestation. In this scenario, and considering that 2011 is the International Year of Forests, Fundação Vitória Amazônica in collaboration with other representatives of civil society and government institutions are promoting the campaign 'clean city and healthy forest' which seeks to sensitize, claim and promote a healthier way of living with the environment of the Novo Airão and the forests of the surrounding city.
Work:
Volunteers will have the opportunity to participate and cooperate actively in the activities of the Campaign (garbage collection, claim and awareness of the municipal recycling system, environmental training in schools, awareness around the issue of forest degradation on the road sides, etc.) but also live with every day of the organizations that operate in Novo Airão and some days will be used to collaborate and interact in their activities with some associations working in the municipality, as the Association of Artisans of Novo Airão the Association of Ex-dwellers do Parque Nacional do Jau, the Nova Esperança Neighborhood Association, among others. In addition, wealth and natural beauty and culture of the Amazon are in themselves great experiences for the volunteer, you will learn, in coexistence, there are many 'Amazon' to be known, enjoyed and preserved.
Accommodation:
FVA Local Base.
Location:
Novo Airão State of Amazonas, Brazil.
Travel:
Volunteers must arrange their trip to Novo Airão, look for the best prices and arrange their visas in Brazil, for the cases of foreign volunteers. We encourage volunteers from other countries to arrive a few days before the start of the project for a short period of adaptation. To travel to Manaus there are several Brazilian airlines serving the city such as, Gol, TAM, Blue, Trip.
Recreation and Cultural Activities:
There are many opportunities for volunteers to enjoy and discover this part of the country. Both Novo Airão as the rest of the Amazonas state have many opportunities to meet the indigenous culture. During the workcamp will occur scheduled recreational activities, however, throughout the day, the volunteer will have time to enjoy the way they prefer.
Use of Alcohol and drugs:
Volunteers should be aware of the risks involved in the use and consumption of illegal drugs as well as the abuse of alcohol. Thus, problems identified related to the use of such substances will not be tolerated and will require the shutdown of the volunteer activities of the project.
Language:
It is not necessary for volunteers to speak Portuguese but it is recommended to facilitate communication during the project. There is no official language in the Workcamp, but Portuguese is the official language in Brazil (coexisting with many other indigenous languages).
Participation Fees:
R$400.00 / volunteer. The participation fees shall be covered by the volunteers on arrival. This covers accommodation, food, some materials for the project and a part of administrative expenses. The workcamp have their costs covered when the actions are planned to be developed in the Campaign. Additional costs for specific actions out of the workcamp will be at the volunteer's responsibility.
« When volunteering in Malawi and Tanzania while at school and during my year out I developed a love of East Africa and soon felt itchy to go back. On discovering VAP I found a number of workcamps in Kenya and at far more affordable prices than any 'volunteer abroad' organisations. I chose a 6 week workcamp based at a secondary school in western Kenya... »
