Fascinating Workcamp that will take place in the small holding/ farm, which is the headquaters of the WWOOF network of organic farming in Spain, up in the North of Spain, really precious humid/mountaneous area close to the Cantabri Sea.
WWOOF (World-Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) is a network of organic farming and WWOOF ESPAÑA is a not-for-profit organisation created with the collaboration of other international WWOOF organisations for Spain.
What is WWOOFing?
WWOOF is a Worlds Network of organic farms whos main goal is to facilitate the contact and experience between volunteers (WWOOFers), and hosts (usually rural inhabitants who practise or promote organic and sustainable methods). It is mainly based on family farms or small holdings where the owner usually lives at the same place and can hosts foreigner volunteers. This experience provides an opportunity to get a lot of knowledge about organic farming, planting, working with animals, macrobiotic gardening or sustainable development, as farms use to have a lot of previous experience on this fields. Nevertheless, the conditions are basic (sleeping in tents, on floor or matrasses in a sleeping bag, cooking for yourselves, etc.) and there is required medium-hard or hard manual work.

The Workcamp:
The workcamp will take place in Cereceda, a small village in the province of Cantabria, northern Spain. This is the third project we do here: the previous ones have been managing a number of smaller projects such as two vegetable gardens, one in a greenhouse, planting fruit trees, constructing a chicken run, the construction of a small wooden house, a dry toilet etc... (see photos)
The Work:
The objectives of this workcamp is to do different kind of work of maintainance of the farm such as cleaning the area (mainly brambles and bushes) and improve the condition of other aspects of the project: the water pond, fencing, gardening, setting tree shelters, etc. Work will contain agricultural and rural tasks: fencing, painting, gardening, planting, tree care, composting, paths conditioning, animals care (horses, hens, ducks). The workcamps will support this small farm but will be a great chance to learn about the WWOOF network.
Away from these physical activities there could be the chance to discover the region (walking) and be involved in local life (environmental activities). The workcamp also has an intercultural aspect, and participants are encouraged to share typical aspects of their culture respectively.
Accommodation and food:
Basic accommodation will be provided in a large tipi or in a rural house in one communal room on floor or matracces. We will also have a place to cook and to rest and we will cook for ourselves, so feel free to bring the best recipes from your grandmother. The food provided will be mostly organic. Nowadays, Calpe is a very famous touristic spot and the Banos de la Reina have become a great site preserved located in front of the Bay of Calpe. Many ancient civilisations settled in this town in the Marina Alta region of Alicante, a history narrated by the remains it preserves, which include this Roman baths Banos de la Reina (Queen s Baths). Deeply-rooted traditions harmoniously coexist with the tourist industry, making it one of the main destinations on the Costa Blanca. Eleven kilometres of beaches and coves, a marina and a beautiful natural environment are part of the immense appeal of the town. Including, of course, its astounding gastronomy, an authentic showcase of Alicante s cuisine. Calpe, a town with a long history and deeply-rooted traditions, is also one of the main tourist destinations on the Costa Blanca. The Marina, the promenade and eleven kilometres of coastline, marked by cliffs, beaches and coves, are some of the many attractions. Another attraction is one of the symbols of the town, the Rock of Ifach, a huge calcareous rock, 332 metres high, that penetrates the sea and gave the town its name. This region has been declared Nature Reserve, because of its botanicaland faunal diversity.
