This workcamp is part of a global project of promotion of responsible tourism and eco-tourism. In fact, Romania has a great number of untouched panoramas and it is important to protect and respect them. That is why this workcamp raises awareness of the local community but also from young people coming from all countries, that might as well be tourists, regarding nature conservation and a responsible touristic development. The tasks of the volunteers will consist of rebuilding of a traditional house in Maramures and transforming it in a local museum. This workcamp is directly linked with the mountainous nature because it plans to build trecking trails from the village to the mountains. Therefore, we recommend and advise the volunteers to have a good physical condition in order to hike without difficulty.
Accomodation:
Camping in tents with outdoor running water facility and outdoor dry toilet which are clean. Meals most often are provided by the local community but there may be situations in which volunteers will cook for themselves (food provided by organisers). It is recommended that the volunteers bring the minimum of camping/outdoor equipment with them (boots, tent, sleeping bag, rucksack, rain coat, warm clothes, hat, personal spoon, fork and cup.) The organisers can provide tents for the volunteers who don't have one.
Location:
Gro?ii ?iblesului is a small village at the foothills of ?ible? Mountains, located in the North of Romania, in Maramure? county. The historical Maramure? region is a living "outdoor museum" famous for its unchanged way of life and for its well preserved wooden villages and churches. It is perhaps one of the best known tourism destinations in Romania. The ?ible? are volcanic mountains (not active) well known for the old growth forests that cover their slopes, for the mountain meadows with a rich flora and for the beauty of the landscape. In this region one can still see local people who are manually mowing the meadows, shepherds that are preparing the cheese in traditional way and buffalo herds that are pasturing close to the village.
« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
