PALOMBAR is an organisation that works for the revitalization and recovery of the traditional dove cotes of the Northeast of Portugal, the protection of nature and the development of the rural culture of this region. Please check - www.palombar.org
Info about the Camp:
The different tasks that the volunteers will be asked to realize are related to the recovery of dove cotes, such as the following...
- Cleaning the weeds and liter around the dove cote. - Cleaning the inside of the construction, possible weeds developed inside, mud, etc. - Pick the old cement. - Cover the walls with plaster, mixed with sand and water. - Paint the dove cote. - Recovering the roof and the door, if necessary.
When the volunteers are not working on the dove cote, they will be taken out to visit the region, to meet traditional artisans and do sightseeing of the beautiful sites that nature offers in Nordeste Transmontano (Northeast of Portugal).
Accommodation/Food:
At an old house with basic conditions (shower, toilets, kitchen, and dining room). We only ask the volunteers to bring a travel sleeping bag and rollmat. However, if some volunteers want to bring a tent for a little bit more of privacy, you can easily set it in the garden.
Location Village of Uva, nearby Vimioso in the district of Bragança, 5km far from the beautiful natural park of the Douro International in the Northeast of Portugal, close to the border with Spain.
Associação Espeleológica de Óbidos (Óbidos Speleology Association) aims at providing thematic visits to the region; endorse the contact with nature through Speleology; stimulate the contact between different cultures. Its main activities are Speleology; archaeology; canoeing; paintball; mountain biking; rope activities; summer camps.
Info about the Camp:
Óbidos for Everyone workcamp comprehends several aims, such as, to provide to the participants thematic visits, in order to know our region; to promote the contact with nature through Speleology and to promote the contact between cultures.
In this camp, the work of the participants will consist on the restoration and evaluation of historical and cultural heritage, through the cleaning of the wall of the Castle of Óbidos, one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
Leisure activities:
Participants will have different leisure activities such as surfing and bodyboarding (our coastal zone is one of the best to practice these sports in the world!); rope activities (slide, Himalaia bridge, rappel and speleology); paintball and also tours to some highlight spots of our region such as the Natural Reserve of the Island of Berlenga, rich in species of sea birds and its wonderful landscape and the Mountain range of Aire e Candeeiros, among others.
Action for Justice and Peace (AJPaz) is an association that has for objectives to build a Culture of Peace, based on the Rights of all persons, on an parity, inclusive and participative Democracy, on social and cognitive justice and in an Environment that is able to give and preserve life.

Info about the Camp:
- Recovery of the Primary School - building and surrounding area. - Community Project / Solidarity Market - participation in the Solidarity Market (design of products/services). - Cultural Meeting - Realization of an intercultural meeting, following the underlying theme of poverty and social exclusion. - Workshops - These are proposals to strengthen and promote group cohesion, providing greater interaction and cooperation between all the participants, but also the sharing of knowledge and expertise. The aim is also to allow the workshops to outline the thrust of this field of work by addressing the issues and intervention.
Accommodation/Food:
Participants will sleep in 1 or 2 collective rooms, equipped with mattresses and pillows only. Participants will have to bring their sleeping bags. Food will be totally managed and cooked by the volunteers organized in teams (3 meals/day, breakfast, lunch and dinner).
Participants will have also to manage in teams to clean, organize and maintain the whole centre as a pleasant and clean place to live. General maintenance of the centre will be of the participants responsibility. There will be several groups that will take care of some tasks for the common good. The teams will be rotating and everybody should contribute and participate. If more teams are needed they can be created.
Associação Social Recreativa Juventude de Vila Fonche aims at developing social solidarity, youth integration as well as the inclusion of the ones that have fewer opportunities in our social life. We try to give better quality on the daoly life of young people and general population trough the most diverse social and cultural activities. Our main activities are Kindergarten; leisure time activities centre; Youth Centre (a space of information and activities), participation in the EU Youth in Action Programme (action 1.1, exchanges, action 2, EVS), youth programmes and activities to the community.
Info about the Camp:
The aims of the project will be to work together with the members of the association and local community in order to give better conditions of life to families facing poverty. The aim is give another “colour” to the life of families that will be chosen to work with according to their necessities.
Work:
according to the aim of the project the group will work in the houses of the families, indoors or outdoors according to their needs. The works will consist in painting, gardening, decorating (improvement), small construction work.
Leisure activities:
Visit to Viana do Castelo and some important villages of the district; visit to some traditional local festivals in Arcos de Valdevez and Ponte da Barca. Sport activities, fluvial beach, rafting, icebreaking games, group games, energizers, traditional parties.
Accommodation/Food:
Volunteers will stay in “Pousadinha” a kind of Youth Hostel that belongs to the organization. This building has a capacity to host 30 persons at the same time; it has 7 rooms, 8 bathrooms, kitchen, dinning room and living room. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be prepared by the volunteers with the help of the young leaders and/or the cook. Volunteers have the opportunity to use Internet in the facilities of the organization.

- Recovery of a Public Space - construction of a rail and rehabilitation of a wooden bridge. - Community Project - on completion of the construction / rehabilitation of the rail and the bridge, we will promote a time when everyone in the community, especially the inhabitants of the new urbanization can see and know the space and the authors of the work. - Workshops - These are proposals to strengthen and promote group cohesion, providing greater interaction and cooperation between all the participants, but also the sharing of knowledge and expertise. Activar is an association established in 2000 in Lousã with the main objective to support the local community. Activar carries out many projects connecting youth participation, children’s leisure time and trainings for the unemployed. The association also sends and host international volunteers for long-term projects (EVS). It is the 4th year that our association organizes international workcamps. Info about the Camp:
Objectives - To restore the cultural heritage (mills and chapel); to Create an accessible path; to build a picnic area with wood and accessible for different people; to build small wooden bridges over the river; to clean the path and put same signs; to promote two intercultural weeks; to encourage voluntary work in the community; to promote Lousã and the region.
Activities and tasks - The participants will cook, clean the paths and build tables and wooden bridges with technical support. They will also organize cultural activities with the community and participate in the financial management of the workcamp. The program include a folklore workshop, (in the first evening) a visit to Coimbra (university city), a visit to an old village in the mountains and a vist to the beach.
Accommodation/Food:
For the accommodation we will be in the Youth Hostel in Lousã. All meals will be prepared by the participants in a space next to the hostel. Each day, there will be a team responsible for shopping, cooking and cleaning this area. However some meals may be in some restaurants in Coimbra and Lousã.
Location:
Lousã is a beautiful town (15.000 habitants) in the middle of a mountain range “Serra da Lousã”. Not long ago it was pure countryside, but due to the development of the region, especially of the city of Coimbra, Lousã is growing up and now it is a place with a great deal of modern attractions existing side by side with tradition and a beautiful nature.
