Our camp will allow you to learn about global & local environmental issues through theory and practice. If you are concerned, for example, about climate change, waste management, animal protection, sustainable solutions & other environmental topics then this project is for you. Local Icelandic environmental issues as well as issues from the participants’ countries will be addressed. Becoming one of over 2 million tourists coming to Iceland every year will leave a mark. This camp will help you to be an environmentally aware traveller & consumer. SEEDS Environmentally Aware camps will get a chance to improve the local environment through hands-on activities. Our groups usually join the campaign "Meet Us Do Not Eat Us" that SEEDS has been supporting for the last seven years: A whale protection awareness project run in cooperation with IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). It may also be possible to organise a visit to a local recycling centre whereby a tour of the plant is given and the activities are explained. We will organise a guided visit to a Geothermal power plant, where participants can learn about the utilization of geothermal energy in Iceland and how it can be utilized in a sustainable manner. There is a selection of workshops whereby a deeper understanding of issues can be studied and discussed. Topics can include issues like animal farming, food waste, and sustainable practices such as collaborative consumption and veganism. We also offer typical local leisure activities (swimming pool, cinema and the flea market). Please note this project is a learning/sharing camp in which everybody is expected to contribute their own knowledge and experience, and not a standard workcamp. We organize some voluntary service but in some cases it will not be possible, as the weather does not always allow activities to take place outdoors.

The Botanic Garden is an outdoor collection of living plants, founded in 1961 and it celebrated its 55th anniversary in 2016. The garden’s main role is to conserve plants for education, research and delight. It conserves some 5000-plant species in eight plant collections. The collections give an idea of the enormous diversity of vegetation in the northern temperate zone. The garden is open to the public and free of charge. SEEDS volunteers will be doing general park maintenance and assisting the horticultural staff attending the collection of perennials, alpines, trees and shrubs in the garden. The garden organizes guided tours and events throughout the summer and some groups of volunteers will assist in the preparation and practical work related to these events. These special events are all related to the general aim and work of the garden and some of them are carried out with a short notice. The work may be repetitive as general gardening tasks tend to be and most of it is outdoors. The project starts early every week day, working hours are from 8:00 - 15:30, so volunteers have to be motivated to work early in the morning.

The main tasks will be planting and cutting trees, cleaning and beautifying the area, tearing down old fences and possibly putting up some new ones. The work schedule will be flexible and it will depend on the needs of our hosts as well as the weather conditions. The tasks are going to be physical and may be demanding.Weather conditions in Iceland are unpredictable, so be prepared to experience all kinds of weather and be sure to bring warm clothing since most of the work will take place outdoors. The closest town to Hamarsfjorour is Djupivogur, which is a charming village with a long history of trading located in Djupavogshreppur. It is the southernmost fjord of the east fjords of Iceland. Near the coast of Djupivogur there is an island called Papey. The island was inhabited since the settlement of Iceland until the year 1966. There is still a lighthouse, a dwelling house, a church and a weather station on the island, the latter has been automatised since 1998. There are also large colonies of Atlantic puffins on the island. Papey is the largest island off the east coast of Iceland, about 2 km in area, and can be visited by a boat from Djupivogur.The East Fjords cover a 120 km stretch of eastern Iceland s twisted coastline between Borgarfjorour Eystri in the north and southern Berufjorour, with small villages mostly given over to fishing, spread along many of the fjords i none of which are particularly large. The area of this project is very diverse and beautiful. The nature has many things to offer and there are plenty of opportunities to go hiking. The view is spectacular and there is the biggest national park in Europe with the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajokull, not far away.

Volunteers will help prepare the environment for the busy season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline. Volunteers will carry out some planting and other gardening activities as well and possibly make and maintain walking paths.Depending on the advance of the project, volunteers may have other possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden furniture.The weather conditions in Iceland are unpredictable and the temperature in May can drop during the evenings. Be prepared to experience all kinds of weather and be sure of bringing warm clothing since most of the work will take place outdoors. Vioey or Wood Island is the largest (1,7 km) island in the Kollafjorour Bay, just outside Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Vioey was inhabited from soon after the settlement of Iceland already in the 10th century and at the beginning of the 20th century around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited.There is a regular boat connection between the island and the harbour of Reykjavik. The island is only a few hundred metres away from the city and the trip takes just about 10 minutes. This makes Vioey so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital.There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also inhabits intriguing sculptural art work, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard s Serra s work fangar and Yoko Ono s Imagine peace column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon. Other places of interest on Vioey are related to archaeological research, the village. At the eastern end of the island is the site of an abandoned fishing village and Vioeyjarnaust, at the southwest of the island, it is a memorial to the twenty men who lost their lives when the cutter Ingvar sank off Vioey in 1906. Dramatic formations of columnar basalt may be seen on the shore.
