The cultural and environmental collective Makvärket is working on creating an open community workshop space on 1500sqm in an old brick factory in Knabstrup, situated 70 km west of Copenhagen. A circus/concert room, a music studio, a wood and metal workshop, a painting studio, a communal garden and yard as well as a communal kitchen and a lounge are planned. Makvärket is aiming to become an open collective of 50-100 people, that are making Makvärket a place for both short and long term projects, workshops, seminars, encounters – from days to months, professionally, recreationally or non-professionally, on a regular or irregular basis, both for local residents or someone from abroad. We have been tearing down, renovating and constructing on the rooms during many weekends of the past year, using recycled and/or ecologically sustainable materials, as we also want Makvärket to be an environmentally friendly place that is considering and valuing the earth's limited resources. We arranged a fantastic, vibrant "Building Festival" with around 40 people last summer, combining working, learning and lots of fun. From 18 to 25 July 2010 the next building festival will take place in Knabstrup.
Work:
The workcamp will start a couple of days before this year's Building Festival. The volunteers are going to prepare the festival, sorting recycled materials and working further on all the different constructing sites in the building. There is still a lot of tearing down to do, compost toilets have to be constructed and we need to start isolating the walls with flax mats and plaster. Hard physical as well as lighter work can be done. Not until the workcamp starts we can tell precisely what needs to be done up to and during the festival, but we will find out together with you! And not to forget, we hope to create a festival atmosphere, where the evenings are filled with music, circus, dance and anything we can think of.
Requirements:
There are no special skills required, but building experience is of course welcome. We will find a suitable project for everyone (and no one is going to work alone!), where you can learn something about building on many different levels. Be prepared for very simple living conditions during the camp. You will need to bring your sleeping bag and a mat, as there is more than enough indoor space but not enough mattresses. There is a toilet but only a cold outdoor shower. Communal meals are prepared together with the volunteers.

Knabstrup, Zealand.

From Copenhagen Central Station local trains will take you to Knabtrub station, 15 min. from the camp.

« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
