They are supported with free accommodation, food and schooling at the center. But it is hard to have private tutors, especially for learning English, so the children need to have help from volunteers. English classes will be organized for the children by volunteers and leisure activities will bring them happiness after hard lessons. The children there are active, lovely, and smart so they can learn really well and promise to have big progress. The center is located in Da Nang - the central area of Vietnam – which has rich regional culture which the volunteers can explore. There are some carers, who look after the younger children, in relatively good conditions. The older children, aged 6-18, take classes at primary, secondary and high school level. They are very active, intelligent children, who are enthusiastic in gaining an education through training courses at the center. Some also have full time jobs such as repairing motorcycles, carpentry etc. The children also take part in growing vegetables and flowers, and taking care of the campus where they live. There are aslo many regular leisure activities, to give the children time to relax and enjoy themselves. The centre mainly wants support from volunteers, who can help in teaching and english.

The Youth House School is a small, non-formal education center for disadvantaged, poor children. It is also a friendly meeting place for young local people and international volunteers, where they can explore their cultural diversity through activities such as music performances, photo exhibitions, and other fun lessons for the children. We need teachers and volunteers to give lessons, and help cook meals for the children every day. These activities are also combined with projects to help older members of the fishing community, who live on slum boats on the red river. They do this by providing them free food, supporting medicines for their diseases, providing water filters, toothpaste, second-hand warm clothes etc. Volunteers will join a team of young local people and SJ Vietnam coordinators, to manage the projects and participate in daily activities at the school. Volunteers need to be highly motivated, have good communication skills, and be able to work independently. Volunteers would also benefit from having many ideas about how to keep the children’s interest, and experience in teaching would be useful if they are required to deal with problematic situations. Above all they must encourage the children to go to the Youth House regularly for free basic education and nutrition food. We have been increasing their awareness of the importance of education, which can help them to get a simple job, and so ensure independent living and economic self-sufficiency. The scheme will demonstrate the important role of volunteering and public/private partnerships for social development.

Nguyen Dinh Chieu doubles as a centre and school for blind adults and children. The blind children come from different provinces with different backgrounds, and the school aims to give them free vocational training and educational courses. They also have musical classes, as many of the children are very talented. This had lead to famous performances, both in and outside of Vietnam. There have been many past volunteers who taught english, so generally their level is quite good. However futher improvement would be welcome, especially as this will also encourage the younger children to learn as well. The school needs volunteers who can teach english to children and create a friendly environment, in order to encourage them to use the most popular and useful language in Vietnam. High motivation, patience, enthusiasm and an independent attitude, are necessary skills for a volunteer. They also need to be creative so they can sustain the children’s interest and so help them to improve their english. Experience in teaching and in working with children is helpful, especially to solve problematic situations with the children

One effective way to learn english is to communicate with people who can speak english fluently. SJ Vietnam wants to help the children in the blind school, know more than one foreign language.
