Cua Van Fisher Village is a place where there are many surrounding beautiful sight-seeing spots. It is one part of Halong Bay, which is approved as a world cultural heritage site. The main attractions are friendly local people and picturesque nature, so it is easy to understand why there is an increasing number of tourists coming to Halong Bay. Even so, the area still has many disadvantaged children who have little access to schooling, not to mention higher education. Because of their tough backgrounds, the children at Cua Van fishing village often only finish their primary schooling, and then stay at home to help their parents earn a living. Their main jobs are fishing, working on aquaculture fields, and selling goods to foreign tourists. For this reason, they have had to often communicate with foreigners before. Volunteers will be assisting in teaching english to the children, and also helping to organise fun activities after study, so that they can improve their english in a more relaxed atmosphere. One challange for volunteers will be to invent different, creative activities to help the children develop more knowledge on protecting their environment. Local volunteers will be present to assist and support participants in the management of the work.
Objectives:
SJ Vietnam and the volunteers will encourage the children to attend basic english classes regularly, which will help them a lot in their daily life. We have been increasing their awareness of education, which can help them to get a simple job, and so ensure a better future, independent living and economic self-sufficiency. Nowadays the environment is a very important part of global issues, so the children also need to made aware about protecting earths enviroment, through creative activities and education.
Accommodation & Food:
Simple accommodation surrounding the project site will be provided. Volunteers also have the choice to stay with host families. This will enivitably give a more genuine experience, improve their Vietnamese language and an understanding about Vietnamese life.
Leisure Activities:
Regular exchanges and discussions on culture, environment, global issues..etc, will be organised, involving one youth club and local people. This will help to give all involved a deeper understanding of each others different cultures. Halong Bay is one of the most famous tourist places in Vietnam, so volunteers have the chance to explore its beauty. Seafood there is so delicious and diversified.
Location:
Halong Bay, Quang Ninh province, Vietnam.
Remarks:
Volunteers need to be enthusiastic, optimistic, patient and full of energy to work with children. They need to have good health, not suffer from seasickness, and can swim well.
« The organisation of the camp community was fantastic! The group was great and we bonded quickly, language was always going to be a tricky one, but everyone attempted English and Indonesian so it made the whole experience fun and educational. »
