The project is aimed at providing volunteers an opportunity to be involved in a social work with a specific targeted group as mentally disabled children, and at enabling Morning Star Centre and its staff and beneficiaries to exchange with people from different cultures who are willing to share with disadvantaged communities.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES:
Morning Star Centre is a non-profit day care center which provides early diagnosis, care and rehabilitation to mentally disabled children in Hanoi and surrounding areas. It also aims to help parents have better understanding on how to take care and educate their disabled children and raise awareness among society about the issue. Morning Star Centre was founded by the Association of Handicapped Children of Vietnam. The Center has a staff of caretakers, teachers, cooks and doctors. Being a very caring group of people, they work long hours with little pay for the sake of the children. The Center is providing early diagnosis, care and clinical intervention, special education and vocational training for children along with counseling service for parents.
COMMUNITY CONTEXT:

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:
Volunteers should like to work with handicapped children and maturity and initiative spirit.
Preference:
Volunteers with background or experience in medical work or disability. However, volunteers without experience or background will still be able to join in different work as children are very excited with foreigners.
VOLUNTEER TASKS:
Volunteers will help with different work in the centre, mainly as follow... - Assisting local staff in providing rehabilitation exercises and therapist treatments for children. - Playing with children and entertaining/educating them with games, music, arts and other exercises. - Helping on fund raising to support the children. - Collecting useful information and documents from different sources. - Teaching English for local staff. - Typical working hours will be from 8am–4pm. Lunch along with a short nap will be between 11am–2pm.

Founded in 1997 and located in Ha Dong City just less than 5 kilometres from VPV headquarters, The Ha Cau Centre For Homeless Children is home to approximately fifty children and four careers. The Centre survives on private local donors to support the children up to and through university. Those who do not make it to a university receive vocational training or are entered into a business program, to try to ensure each child can grow up with the potential for a bright and happy future.

VOLUNTEER TASKS:
Although the children receive an education from the local school, the volunteer's main task is often to help the children develop their English skills. More often than not however, during an average 9-4 day volunteers will spend a good deal of their time involved in extra- curricular activities; helping with handicrafts, chores or in the kitchen (an excellent opportunity to learn a few skills of the Vietnamese cookbook!).

PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES:
Nguyen Tri Primary School is a public primary school where English & French are an optional subject, as the government does not have financial support though all recognize the importance of language skills. With 1013 students, the school is a lively government centre situated in central Hanoi. The children, ranging from 6 to 10 years, do have some knowledge of the English language, but as is often the case for Vietnamese students, they have poor pronunciation due to their lack of contact with English speaking people.
COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Situated just a few hundred meters south of West Lake, the school is very central. West Lake is a short walk away and the old quarter can be reached on foot in just 15 minutes.

Volunteers can attend as well a Community English Class in VPV office; it takes place in the afternoon, for children living in the neighbourhood. Volunteers can join this class one or two days per week, depending on their schedule.

Vu The Lang School is a semi public school with about 800 students aged between 15-17 years old. Located in a province far away from the capital, there is very little chance for the children and teachers to meet foreigners to practice English and exchange communication skills. The investment in education is still very limited. English is still an optional subject in primary school without any financial support from the government, while the quality of English teaching is very limited due to the lack of practice and the low capacity of the teachers.
COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Phu Tho province is a semi mountainous area where people do not have regular access to intercultural learning, or at least meeting foreigners. There is a potential for tourism development in the province and English is essential for future careers of the children.

Volunteers should like to work with children, have maturity and initiative spirit. English native speakers preferred.

Nam Trung Yen Secondary School is one of many public schools in Hanoi's outskirts. English in these schools is an optional subject as the government does not have financial support though all recognize the importance of language skills. There are about 300 children aged from 11-15 years old who started learning English at grade 3 (9 years old). Teachers and children had not had many chances to meet and talk with foreigners until VFP-VIET sent its volunteers to help there.
COMMUNITY CONTEXT:

The Van Lang secondary school teaches approximately 1,700 children, ranging in age from 11 to 15 years old. The children of this school are all students that were allowed entrance into the school due to have achieved good primary school results. These achievements, recognized by the school board and teachers, are not taken for granted and the concentration lies on educating the children by getting the most out of their potential. Located in a province far away from the capital, there is very little chance for the children and teachers to meet foreigners to practice English and exchange communication skills. To provide English native language speaking environment for gifted students in a special program to develop their skills before starting university studies.
PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES:
Hanoi National University of Education has developed a Gifted High School that is training 700 gifted students from a wide region around Hanoi. The students are trained in different majors related to Sciences, IT, mathematics or English language. These students will become teachers of foreign languages or will work using foreign languages as a professional tool.
COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Hanoi National University is located in the western gate of Hanoi Capital. These students will become the future high qualified professionals of Vietnam and provide them with good English skills will be decisive for the international development of the country.
VOLUNTEER’S REQUIREMENTS:
Volunteers should like to work with students and show maturity and initiative spirit. Volunteers should be able to work independently in the classroom. University degree required. Teaching certificates preferred. English native speakers ONLY.

To provide English native language speaking environment for underprivileged students and develop English communicative skills for labour export market.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES:
Tran Hung Dao Vocational College teaches around 200 underprivileged students from 18 to 21 years old, according with the Ministry of Labour-Invalids and Social Affairs plan. The main purpose is to provide highly-qualified training for labour force, equipping underprivileged students with effective and practical professional skills related with computer repairing, computer programming, metal works and accounting, in different levels of professionalism. The Vocational College provides as well communicative English skills in order to meet the high demand of the society in the integration process, especially with the labour export market.
COMMUNITY CONTEXT:
Tran Hung Dao Vocational College is located near My Dihn bus station, in Tu Liem District, 10 km from Hanoi city centre. One of the increasing labour market requirements is the English language skills and usually this sector of the population have a very little chance to learn foreign languages or to meet foreigners to practice English and exchange communication skills.
