Since the Youth Centre project was launched 9 years ago SJ Vietnam has succeeded in meeting their first target goals due to the support of our local and international partners and endless hard work of our coordinators and volunteers.
SJ Vietnam had sent most of the disadvantaged, poor and street children to public school and vocational school where they can acquire a proper education and get integrated into the society. Nevertheless the school fees, provided entirely by SJ Vietnam, are rather expensive and need to be covered. SJ Vietnam will therefore continue to provide education to the children staying at the Youth Center but will also participate to activities to raise funds to cover the children school fees. The Centre demonstrates the important role of volunteerism and public-private partnerships in social development.
Our general aspirations:
gathering together to establish this center for disadvantaged, poor and street children; create a space for people to exchange ideas, have a chance to study vocational skills and to be integrated in the community. We also want this center to be a place for Vietnamese youth to exchange their knowledge, experience and culture with international volunteers via workshops and everyday exchange. The Youth House school has now become a Youth center.
Work:
Organize activities for disadvantaged children who live illegally in the Red river and at the school nearby Youth center.

The Mid-Autumn festival is named "Tết Trung Thu" in Vietnamese. It is also known as Children's Festival because of the event's emphasis on children. In olden times, the Vietnamese believed that children, being innocent and pure, had the closest connection to the sacred and natural world. Being close to children was seen as a way to connect with animist spirits and deities.
One important event before and during the festival are lion dances. Dances are performed by both non-professional children's groups and trained professional groups. Lion dance groups perform on the streets, going to houses asking for permission to perform for them. If the host consents, the "lion" will come in and start dancing as a blessing of luck and fortune for the home. In return, the host gives lucky money to show their gratitude
Work:
Volunteers will prepare performances and gifts for the disadvantaged children with different backgrounds from different projects of SJ Vietnam: street children living in the Fisher Village or the children patients in National hospital of Acupuncture, etc.

Volunteers will stay at the dormitory with basic conditions. Breakfast and dinner will be provided at accommodation, only lunch at local restaurant near project site.

Christmas is not listed as a Vietnamese official holiday but we still celebrate that day in Vietnam since Vietnam used to be part of the French Empire and there are still French influences in the Christmas traditions. Many Catholic churches have a big nativity crib scene or 'creche' with nearly life size statues of Mary, Joesph, baby Jesus, the shepherds and animals. In some areas of Ho Chi Minh City, usually in Catholic parishes, people have big crib scenes in front of their houses and decorate the whole street, turning it into a Christmas area! These are popular for people to visit and look at the scenes. We - SJ Vietnam try our very best to “bring” Santa Clause, whose are our international volunteers to the disadvantage children (orphans, disabled, intellectual, hospital patients, the homeless and the poor) to share and to build up their dream. Children can be born in different situation but they need to live in an equal environment and we are here to create that environment.
