Sam Nag Kam is a small sub-district of Sadao, Songkhla province, where the Thai-Malaysian border is 2 kilometers away from the campsite. The teaching project is situated in a normal and bi-lingual public school called Wat Sri Witedsangkaram, providing kindergarten to secondary. Students ages are between 3-15 years old. Most students come from different provinces through Thailand. They move to this school because of their parents work. The knowledge of English is half poor half fair, comparing with other bi-lingual schools in the city. Volunteers will have a challenge to teach in a bi-lingual part, about 100 students. It sounds like a rich school but it is actually not. Bi-lingual section students only pay low school fees for this curriculum. It is one of the government educational policies to give an opportunity to students who are fond of studying the language. For Thai children, English language is really difficult: the alphabet and the pronunciation are completely different. You will experience it yourself during your project. With our teaching project, school provides some hours out of the Thai/Filipino teachers teaching English in order to get students motivated and interested in learning English. First we stimulate them to enjoy the class, show them it can be fun and useful to learn English by giving creative lessons (games and songs) in a relaxing way.

Tan Yong La Nai is a name of a small Muslim fishermen village where only a hundred families live in. The village is located in a far-away island connected by bridges. The dimensions of the island are only one square kilometer. It is no doubt that every single family regards the fishery industry as their main, permanent career. Also, there is a very small kindergarten and primary school in the village where there are only 60 students and 5 teachers. You will find no answer how those kids are good at English; they only know some basic words and the alphabet. It is worth a reward if you bring some sort of teaching creativity with fun games or songs with you. That is for the first week of the project. The second week will be all about environmental activities such as planting young seedlings in the mangrove forests, sharing hands with the locals to come up with the idea of useful activities for the village and making shelters for sea animals. As it is obvious that on both sides of the long, narrow road to the village, everywhere is green!

Baan Hua Kuan is a small Buddhist village of Hat Yai district, Songkhla province. It is about 15 kilometres away from Hatyai city. There are about 1,000 people living in it. Actually, the location connects to the other nearby villages. Most of the villagers work on the rubber plantation and some work for factories around the village. Quite a few inhabitants emigrated from the northeastern parts of Thailand. They are low-income workers whose children lack of educational opportunities. The teaching project is situated in a rural school, providing kindergarten to secondary sections, called Klong Nok Gra Tung. The school looks fairly spacious; nearly all school buildings are made of wood and separately scattered all around the school area. Sports pitches are available. There are about 318 students and 21 teachers. Students’ ages are between 3-15 years old. The knowledge of English is quite poor comparing with other schools in the city. Most Thai Schools want foreigners to teach English. For Thai children, English language is really difficult: the alphabet and the pronounciation are completely different. You will experience it yourself during your project. These are some of the reasons most Thai children living far away from the so called civilization have no chance to learn English by themselves: lack of home Internet access, a cause of poverty or a remote area.
With our teaching project, school provides some hours extra of the Thai teachers teaching English in order to get students motivated and interested in learning English. First we stimulate them to enjoy the class, show them it can be fun and useful to learn English by giving creative lessons (with games and songs) in a relaxing way.
Aims of workcamp:
To improve and enhance children’s English language ability. To let children be familiar with volunteers and learn in an international/multi-cultural atmosphere. To support Klong Nok Gra Tung school. To build a good relationship between volunteers and local people.

Thung Mor is a small Buddhist village of Sadao district in Songkhla province, south of Thailand. It is about 25 kilometres away from the Thai-Malaysian border. The project will be held in a local public primary and secondary school named Borgate Wijitwittaya. The school normally provides curriculum from kindergarten to secondary (3-15 years old). Most of the villagers work on rubber plantation, but some work for factories in a nearby town. Annually in October, public and private schools all over Thailand are giving a 3-week holiday break to students. So, there’s no school during your voluntary service at the project. For those two weeks we will repair and decorate outdoor school walls and surroundings. Firstly, we repair and prepare. When everything is ready for painting, then pictures are drawn. We need your ideas, creativity and motivation to get this job done. So, let’s scatter the walls with creative and beautiful pictures, plus colourful paints for the children!
In this project, you will be doing the following activities: painting and drawing the outdoor school walls; organising fun and cheerful activities for the village children; arranging school surroundings such as creating nice gardens; learning Thai language and culture.

Thung Tam Sao is a small Buddhist village of Hat Yai district, Songkhla province. The teaching project is situated in a rural kindergarten and primary school called Rak Muang Thai 6 (I love Thailand), which is surrounded by rubber plantations and close to one of the most beautiful national parks in the south of Thailand; with a multi-level waterfall known as Ton Nga Chang Waterfall, only 4 kilometres away from the school. There are about 167 students and 11 teachers there. Students ages are between 3-12 years old. The knowledge of English is quite poor comparing with other schools in the city. Kuk Kak is a sub-district of Takua Pa, Phang Nga province, which is located on the famous beaches of Khao Lak in the Andaman Sea, south of Thailand. In December 2004, Thailand encountered an unexpected natural disaster - the notoriously big, tidal wave “tsunami”. Its devastating powers destroyed houses, people and hopes in the areas near the shorelines around the Andaman Sea waters. After the gigantic waves, there were many NGOs popping up and giving a hand to help restore places, rebuilding houses, and especially building up hope for the families who have lost their members. One of the NGOs with which DaLaa has recently begun to cooperate with this year is known as “Foundation for Children, Phang Nga”. Most of the children under their patronage were affected by the impact of the tsunami. They are the offspring of Moken tribe, sea gypsy ethnic minorities, plus other Thai kids who are part of the foundation. Those kids are fairly disadvantaged in education and come from low-income families. The foundation staff have launched so many worthwhile projects that gather up the once hopeless kids in the area to involve them into useful group activities. Nowadays they’ve been assisting some local pre-schools, public primary schools and organizing a special activity for kids on weekends.
DaLaa volunteers will give non-formal English classes and create nice and cheerful activities with them. For example, volunteers will set up some fun games, a drawing competition, a singing contest/teaching them songs, they will be organizing environmental activities such as cleaning up the beach, planting trees or giving knowledge on environmental issues. Even though the project site is well known as a tourist attraction, there’s still a small spot hidden waiting to be seen.
Aims of the workcamp:
To give non-formal English classes to the local kids (2-15 years old). To organize nice activities for kids. To let children be familiar with volunteers and learn in an international/multi-cultural atmosphere. To support the Foundation For Children, Phang Nga. To build a good relationship between volunteers and local people.
Accommodation:
All volunteers will stay in a place (office) provided by the foundation.
Location:
Kuk Ka district, Phang Nga province (south of Thailand).
Hosting Fee:
7,000 Baht (about 150 Euro), to be paid on arrival to DaLaa.
Baan Pru is situated in a suburban area of Hat Yai district, Songkhla province. It is about 15 kilometres away from Hat Yai city, and approximately one hour ride to the Thai-Malaysian border. Most villagers work on rubber plantations, nearby factories (fish/latex) and some are low-income labourers. The teaching project is organised in cooperation with a government school providing kindergarten to primary sections, named Baan Po Mor taken care by Baan Pru Municipality. Based on the school background 70 years ago, there were two merciful donors who saw the importance of founding an educational center in their community, so they have donated some pieces of their own land to set up Baan Po Mor School. Nowadays, there are about 520 students (some families emigrated here from the northeastern parts of the country) and 25 teachers. Students ages are between 3-12 years old. Even though the school location looks adequate and is surrounded by several developed buildings such as houses, banks or convenient stores, the students English knowledge is quite poor compared to other schools in the city. Teachers expect their students to be capable of communicating with foreigners in English. They lack of an accurate pronounciation and proper speaking. For Thai children, English language is really difficult: the alphabet and the pronounciation are completely different. You will experience it yourself during your project. « We did a lot of conservation work, building hiking paths, tidying up wooded areas, removing weeds, planting trees, etc. The work was extremely successful and I found it very rewarding. »
