Eden Social Welfare Foundation is one of the largest NGOs in Taiwan. Eden is a Christian NGO serving people with disabilities as well as other dysfunctional families, and we have various kinds of serving targets, including children with developmental delays, new immigrants, victims of natural disasters, families with economical difficulties, etc. The first Eden International Volunteer Project was held in 2009, focusing on serving Taiwan’s dysfunctional families through the devotion of Foreign Volunteers and Taiwanese Volunteers in every summer. The volunteers will teach English, share their home culture, and play with the youth with visual impairments, the children of the new immigrants (the foreign spouses of Taiwanese men), the children studying in the remote elementary (primary) schools, and other underprivileged children. The volunteers will also lead the children and youth to read the Bible and sing the Christian songs everyday. Moreover, the volunteers will go to an Eden farm and do the gardening work, including weeding, planting (flowers or crops), soil preparation, scaffold building and other construction work. And of course, the volunteers will have their free days to play around the beautiful Taiwan and experience the traditional Taiwanese culture, e.g. night markets (world-famous), splendid sceneries(beautiful mountains and blue seas), yummy food (world-famous: stinky tofu, pig blood cake), and multiculture in Taiwan (aborigine, hakka, etc)! In Eden, we work hard and play hard!
In 2011 Eden International Volunteer Project, so far this project will be run in 4 different cities and counties around Taiwan: (listed from Northern Taiwan to Southern Taiwan)
1. English Camp for the youth with visual impairments, in the Banciao Church of New Taipei City. 2. Work Camp in the Eden farm, Taichung City. 3. Multicultural Camp for the children studying in the remote elementary school, the Jhanghu Primary School in Yun-Lin County. 4. Multicultural Camp for the children of the new immigrants, Di-Tou-Gang Elementary School in Tainan City.
This year, we will also volunteer in different cities and counties of Taiwan. This is a great chance to serve the needy and also explore the different beauties of Taiwan. In our project, we think that being closed to the local society is as important as providing the volunteer services. As long as we can truly understand the needs of the local people, then we can serve them in a contributing way. In 2011 project, we will continuously focus on serving the youth with visual impairments, the children of the new immigrants, and a new target-the children studying in the remote elementary schools. These children and youth are a member of the dysfunctional families, having limited access to education resources or even having difficulties to learn successfully. Many of the children live in the remote countryside where the resources are rare and lack of job opportunities; they might face the challenge of poverty and grandparenting. The youth with visual impairments have to work really hard to learn as well as others due to the learning barriers resulting from their lack of vision. Therefore, through Eden’s International Volunteer Project, the volunteers can use their talents in English teaching and share their home culture with the needed children and youth, in order to raise their passion in learning, love their home town and broaden their perspectives on global village, increasing their competitiveness to have a better future! Moreover, the volunteers can definitely learn a lot from these volunteer services! We will meet and work with other young people from different cultural backgrounds, and make a better world with love and care for the needy. We can reap our own harvest!

« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
