Pasir Sari, Poncol and Bugisan are areas in Pekalongan where children with less opportunities and drop out children are living. This happen because of the very low income of their parents who normally work in the informal sector. A hard living in the city leads people to be hardly struggle for a living. This cause parents in having their children as “money producers” by asking them to go down on the streets to beg money. To solve this problem IIWC decided to have a volunteer house in Pekalongan and place some LMTV (Long and Medium Term Volunteers) who support those children education.

The work camp volunteers should support the LTV in teaching the children as well as their parents in hygiene issues and on how to raise their living standards. After this pilot period, this project turns the focus more on education especially highlighting the mental side of the children in the prostitution. This is due to the lack of concern on this issue from all stakeholders in Tegalrejo prostitution area, while IIWC found out that there are big chances for IIWC to address the children issue.

This shelter is used for children to learn their school subjects and to gain soft skills such as handicraft, dance, singing, etc assisted by volunteers. This year we start to set up international group to support this project and make it better in the future.
