Gedongsongo is one of the tourist spots in Central Java. There are 9 temples in the area and they are very interesting places to have holidays. Still, the environmental conditions, socio-economic background, sanitation and hygiene of the local people need to be improved. Most of the inhabitants are earning money from the vegetable gardens they own. At weekends, they sell the vegetables to the visitors at the tourist spots.
This project will be the sixth organised there. Based on the last work camp evaluations, the volunteers will do the follow-up of activities; education and sharing knowledge on garbage recycling, managing garbage dumping and other relevant environmental activities.
The main aims of the camp are to increase the awareness of the local people about garbage problems (especially non-organic garbage) and to introduce them to the recycling process.
Work:
The volunteers will work on activities aiming to change the behaviour of the local people towards their environment. They will do that through work on issues such as recycling garbage, composting, introducing personal hygiene related to the environmental conditions, organising additional English lessons and school visits, and playing games with the local children. There will be also possibilities of planting trees, making a garden together with the local students for preserving and promoting an healthy environment.
Special remarks:

Organised together with local people and the local regency of Demak, the volunteers will do activities related with environment and health.
For your information, the local people of Demak have a very unique way of life believing in a myth connected with using the water from the river that flows in the middle of the city. It is believed that they will get the blessing from their ancestors if they use the water from the river for their daily needs like bathing, washing and cooking. Still, the large use of chemical soap for washing dishes and clothes decreased the quality of the water. Also the habit of throwing garbage into the river made the water conditions even worse.
The volunteers will introduce local people to subjects such as recycling and reusing garbage, they will also be visiting the local schools for environmental education actions and will be cleaning the river together with the locals.
The main aim of the activity is to increase the awareness of the local people about healthy environment and life.
Work:
Introduction of recycling and reusing of garbage to the local people and students, cleaning river and village together with the local people, cleaning schools together with the local students and teachers, and many games related with environmental education.
Special remarks:

This project will be the first of IIWC taking place in Senjoyo, a village on the hills with beautiful views around. For junior and senior high school students, this place is famous as a camping or tracking region. The beautiful views, natural water flows from the mountain and fresh air can be very attractive for people to visit.
But the awareness of both the local people and the visitors to keep the environment clean is still too low. It is quite common for people to throw garbage into the river or anywhere else. The impact is quite bad; the quality of the water decreasing and soon the place will turn into a small plastic mountain.
Together with the local people and schools, the volunteers will organise some activities related to the environment such as school visits for increasing the awareness of the local students to keep their surroundings clean, games and competitions on environmental issues, cleaning the surroundings together with visitors and local people, etc.
The main aim of the work camp is to increase the awareness of the local people and visitors to keep the environment clean.
Work:
School visits for environmental education, green foster parents, cleaning river together with the local people, picking garbage in the public spots together with local students and visitors, competitions and games on environmental issues.

Preserving natural diversity and sea shores from the abrasion because of lack of mangroves and too strong waves from the ocean will be the main focus of the camp.
This project will be the fourth organised by IIWC in answering the needs of preserving the coastal side of North Java Sea in Mangkang. This area is now in danger due to the abrasion of the sea, the cutting of mangroves by local factories and the heavy force from the river flows. Before, many kinds of fish and shrimps were living here, but now since the conditions of the mangrove forest are getting worse, it is quite difficult to find these species anymore. Fishermen also need to go further to the ocean to fish and that means they need to work much more in order to earn money.
The aims of the camp are to initiate the project of protecting the sea shore, increase the awareness of the local people and the fishermen to protect their environment as well as their future.
Work:
Planting mangrove, and other trees at the beach, environmental education to local people and children, school visits for environmental education and Olympic Games for environment.
Special remarks:
Very hot and poor hygienic conditions in this poor coastal area. Be ready with sun block. Bring some ideas on environmental education (especially about mangroves and how to take care of it) and Olympic games for environmental education for small children aged from 6-12 and for adults.

Background: Hometown of the Dejavato Foundation, Semarang city is the 5th biggest city of Indonesia and is populated by about 1.5 million people. It is located on 400 km. east of Jakarta (the capital city of Indonesia). In cooperation with local partners and government, Dejavato has always been active for the local development of some disadvantaged neighborhood of the city. In the Panjangan neighborhood, where its office is, the Foundation is member of a community of local volunteers whom together take care of the common spaces, the security of the inhabitants and, more important, the harmony between neighbors. As all the land belongs to individuals or to the management of the residential area, there is a lack of public green space and playgrounds for children. Location: Location: Mangkang, Semarang Central Java Indonesia.Language: English should be spoken among participants Partner: Project: The project, mainly will be promoting the preservation natural diversity and sea shore from the abrasion because of no more mangrove and too strong waves from the ocean will be the main focus of the camp. This project will be the third year project organized by IIWC in answering the needs of preserving the coastal side of North Java Sea in Mangkang. About 2 km costal line in Mangkang area is now in danger due to the abrasion of the sea, cutting mangrove by local people and heavy force from the river flows. The local community would like to make a green belt along the damaged coastal line. It has been more than 7 years they try to get help from the government or the other environment institution but until now there is only 1 km green belt done. So, last summer, on August 1st-2nd 2009, during the 2nd Mangkang Camp 2009, IIWC together with LSM Lepaas organized the 1st Jamboree Mangrove International in this area. 350 volunteers from Indonesia together with 20 international volunteers participated in this Jamboree and they succeeded to plant more than 60.000 mangrove seeds. This action made a great impact. The local people are more aware with this issue; more students do planting mangrove project in Mangkang more regularly, the local company would like to help providing the seeds, and the local government is considering the idea to create Mangrove center in Mangkang. However, in order to keep the sustainability of the project for the result of the green Mangkang in the future, IIWC commits to keep doing the voluntary activities in Mangkang. The aims of the camps are to help to increase the awareness of the local people and the fisherman to protect their environment as well as their future.
