Abu Hurairoh orphanage is one of the Moslem orphanages located in Salatiga (2 hours by bus from Semarang city centre) with 65 children living in this orphanage. This place provides education for children as well as a place to stay. Most of the children are orphans, but some others are coming from very poor families that can not support their education. The needs that we identified from this project are capacity building for the children to increase their self confidence, inter-cultural learning, additional English and Japanese classes, IT classes and how to use computers and skills development.
Project:
Organised together with the Moslem orphanage of Abu Hurairoh, the volunteers will set up additional English lessons for the children in the afternoons and evenings (the children live separately between girls and boys and mainly the volunteers will work with the boys) and in the weekend or during holidays, the volunteers can also organise additional leisure activities for raising capacity building and self confidence. There is a possibility to organise IT and computer free classes with the children, but up to now, no volunteers have done it yet.
Work:
Organising additional English lessons for the children in the afternoons, helping the orphanage with skills development for the children such as computer basic skills, capacity building by organising outdoor activities, sports competitions, music classes, and assisting the staff taking care of the children with their daily life. There are also the chance to make visits to some schools around the orphanage where the children are going to. Please note that the children activities are very changeable, for example it is quite often that the children get an invitation for a charity event just several hours before your class, so please be prepared to be very flexible as well as for any immediate changing of your schedule and activities.

Al-Azhari is a small Moslem orphanage in the outskirts of Semarang city with very simple basic facilities. The orphanage is situated in a somehow remote area with no public transportation available to reach it after 6pm, but the children are very motivated to learn new things and to get in touch with foreign volunteers. There are about 35 children living there in very simple conditions. Al Azhari is quite a challenging project for the international volunteers because of the characteristics and nature of the project itself. This orphanage has a basic Moslem education system combined with the formal Indonesian system and targets low educated and poor inhabitants. Do not be surprised if the children will request you for candies, small presents or even money because of the poverty that their family and them have to face. The main role of the volunteer is to make sure that a 3 months package of English lessons material can be delivered to the children. English is preferable because it is one of the most difficult subjects at school for them. Other works that should be done by the volunteers are capacity building to increase self confidence of the children, increasing awareness on personal health and hygiene, and increasing the awareness of the children for their environment with topics such as garbage disposal.
Work:
Organising additional English lessons for the children in the afternoons and evenings on a 3 months package based on the material provided, helping the orphanage with skills development for the children, capacity building of the children by organising outdoor activities, sports competitions, music classes, environmental education and assisting the staff taking care of the children at their daily life. On Sundays or during holidays, international volunteers together with local volunteers can organise weekend workcamps to clean up the surroundings of the place.

Daarul Aitam orphanage is one of the orphanages in Pekalongan (around 3 hours from Semarang) giving opportunity for orphan children and children from poor families of the surrounding areas to have access to education and a place to stay and grow as all children should. There are more than 100 children living in this institution which provides several kinds of activities especially linked with education and skills development of the children. This orphanage is a good example of how society (in this case batik's entrepreneurs) can address the social needs of the local people such as, for instance, having an institution for orphan children. There you can find self managed activities for the children with very good management, but they still need the help of volunteers to run the activities especially due to their lack of English skills and intercultural learning because contact with foreign people and foreign cultures is such a rare opportunity for these children.
The role of the volunteers in this project will be focused on three main areas - they should help children to improve their motivation levels especially in education; they are expected to help the staff of the orphanage to create activities for the children in their spare time; they should act as the bridge between the children world with the international world so that children can enhance their vision about the world and their future.
Project and Work:
Organised together with the Moslem orphanage of Daarul Aitam, the volunteers will work with more than 100 children in the orphanage organising additional English lessons, skills development tasks and other possible activities for the children.
