Founded in 1336, the site of Hampi is located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, in Karnataka, South India and is known for its temples, monuments and architecture. In 1986, UNESCO inscribed the group of monuments at Hampi as a World Heritage site. More recently in 1999 Hampi was listed by UNESCO on the List of World Heritage sites in danger prompted by the construction of two new suspension bridges and a new major road within the Core Protected Area which threatens the World Heritage site’s integrity.
UNESCO World Heritage Center along with CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Sevice) and partner organizations launched the initiative “World Heritage Volunteers” - aimed at raising awareness about the necessity to protect, preserve and promote cultural and natural heritage sites. This year FSL-India decided to participate in this initiative through the World Heritage Volunteers camp in Hampi.
The main objective of the camp would be to spark interest among the local community by involving children and international volunteers in activities that promote sensitivity and respect towards the World Heritage site at Hampi. The work will require a lot of creativity and motivation from the volunteers to convey the message through dramas, plays etc. Volunteers will be involved in the following activities...
A. Involve the local school children in activities to raise awareness from in and around Hampi through local guides.
B. Clean up activities around Virupaksha temple and Hampi Bazar, which is most visited by tourists and Pilgrims.
C. Planting Trees and looking after them around the pilgrimage area.
D. Organizing Drawing competition for the school children and opening it up to local people by setting up an open gallery.
E. Continue with the restoration work of a temple that has been unearthed with the help of volunteers in the last two years 2007 and 2008.

« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
