Kundapur is a town situated near the beach on the west coast of Karnataka state, and is very close to the Western Ghats (a mountain ridge). The Western Ghats is India s prime zone for bio-diversity and known for its animal and plant species in this region. FSL-India has been involved in developing projects for many years in this region and has now formed a very strong network of local partners and local volunteers. In 2004, FSL-India started a Marine Turtle protection project in collaboration with the Forest and Wild Life Department of the State of Karnataka. Over a 60 kilometre stretch of beach, surveys are conducted and turtle nests are protected until the hatching of the eggs. In 2011, more than 1500 baby turtles reached the ocean safely thanks to the effort of our volunteers. This year again we will aim to improve our performance. The Work Camps will also focus on creating awareness to the general public, fishermen community and to the schools about the importance of turtles in the bio-diversity. Awareness programs for the local community will involve Beach walks, Puppet shows, Dramas and plays, Mural Painting etc. The volunteers will also be involved in building Turtle Information Centre huts along the beach.
Accomodation & food:
Accommodation: In a rented Guest house or Hostel, with shared rooms. Accommodation can vary a lot in our camps from youth hostels, guest houses, lodges etc. The accommodation will be simple but comfortable and clean, so be prepared to live a simple lifestyle during these two weeks. Food: Indian food will be provided for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Filtered water is always available for drinking purposes.

Kundapur also can be reached from Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore and Kerala by train/bus. Kundapura is well connected to other parts of the country by National Highway -17. Kundapura is also connected by the Konkan Railway, which runs from Mumbai to Mangalore. Kundapura railway station is about 4 kilometres from the town. To promote intercultural learning, the team leaders will arrange visits to places of interest, weddings, festivals, local house visits, interaction with local youth etc. The local community would be more than happy to welcome you. This is one a series of eight workcamps forming the Support my School (SMS) programme which runs from April to December. These projects are planned with a long-term goal of sustainable development and involve works that are intended to change the lives of children and local communities. The theme of SMS projects this year is of Education. A special SMS (Support My School) Campaign is launched to strengthen school infrastructure in order to provide all basic amenities in the government schools for overall development of children. Under the campaign, the work will focus on five areas of 1. Access to water, 2. Rain water harvesting, 3. Sanitation, 4. Sports and 5. Landscaping.

In order to implement Right To Education the State is gearing up to strengthen infrastructure in all its schools. RUCHI has selected Solan district to concentrate its efforts as a part of Support My School Campaign. Solan is the second largest city in the state and its boundaries touch the states of Haryana and Punjab.
In order to make an impact RUCHI plans to focus its work in one State Government Senior Secondary School of Solan district.
Work:
During the camp volunteers will be visiting the schools and rural settlement of the region to present the importance of health and hygiene, environment awareness and the need for education among the adults along with the children. Volunteers who participate in these camps need to come up with some concrete ideas. Work may involve access to water, rain water harvesting, renovation of school building, wall paintings, and creative activities with children. Repairing of play ground, cleaning school surrounding etc. will be done. Play through learning activities will be encouraged.
Accommodation:
Volunteer will live in guest house or host family with shared room. Authentic north Indian breakfast and lunch and dinner will be served.
Leisure time:
Self organized city tours and excursions. Old Sikh and Hindu temples in the near vicinity can be visited. Nearby Kasauli town is a colonial hill station as a tourist attraction. A visit to Shimla will offer an opportunity to see high Himalayan Mountains.
Valleys of the Himalayas - This small paradise on earth is home to the His Holiness Dalai Lama and to a significant Tibetan settlement in India. Dharamsala is set in the backdrop of the snow-clad peaks of Dhaulathar Mountains. It is the capital of the Tibetan Government in exile and the residence of the Dalai Lama. In the first two weeks of the camp, the volunteers will get the opportunity to learn about the Tibetan culture and the different issues related to the exile of its people and the re-settlement in India. There will be cultural activities and exchange with the Tibetan Youth with the support of the Tibetan Welfare Office. The project will also include an awareness campaign for the protection of the environment and solid waste management in cooperation with the Tibetan welfare office. Furthermore, the volunteers will have the chance to support a local Indian/Tibetan school in need of simple renovation work and interact with the school children. Volunteers will teach children in formal and non-formal schools about basic English and Mathematics, Health and Hygiene, and Environmental protection through creative learning methods like art, music, games etc. On the third week of the camp volunteers will take part in a four-day trekking activity around the mountains of Dharamsala and Triund.
