SiChuan Province, XiChang Prefecture City, YanYuan County, YouSuo Township, TaErDi village.
Project:
TaErDi Recovered Village is situated in SiChuan Province, XiChang Prefecture City, YanYuan County, YouSuo Township’s TaErDi Village. The village mainly consists of the Yi minority and currently has 340 people. The villagers are unable to leave the village (for financial, societal, and educational reasons) and have to face the fact that the village has low productivity, a large population, a paucity of land, and no medical security. Presently, there are 41 children enrolled in school, but the school urgently lacks teachers and even more urgently lacks funds. The teachers are also very limited in their education. The village carried out a work camp for the first time in August 2009 to mainly do educational work and teaching improvement. In January 2010 activities continued in the village, focusing on education, helping eight villagers to solve their problems of drinking water, and now we have a lasting and good relationship with the villagers.
Accommodation:
It depends on the project (big tents, classrooms, community centres, etc.) but in most places you will need a sleeping bag and mat. Sometimes there is no electricity and not enough tap water to drink. Hard to take showers but we will try our best to meet your demands (even a bucket a day.) Please check details on the Info Sheet you will get from us through VAP after you have been confirmed at the project.
Book the flights as soon as being accepted:
Please don’t wait for the Information Sheet, otherwise you may miss economical flights! In all workcamps in China, we will pick volunteers up from the airport, railway station or long distance bus station. So, we advise volunteers to arrive/leave China at least a few days before/after the project, also because volunteers should not expect so much sightseeing during the project. If you want to do it, please do it before/after the workcamp. It is quite possible to stay in a Youth Hostel, guest house, travelers’ hotel, etc. (4-10 US$ per night) together with volunteers from the same workcamp before/after the workcamp and we Chinese are very hospitable to foreigners! You can get a chance to do a home-stay as well. Why not? If you want they will accept you kindly and be your guide to travel around to enjoy the marvellous scenic sights and experience the diversified culture of the different ethnic groups of our country (More details in the Info Sheet!).
« I would recommend participating in a workcamp, especially with VAP, who ensured that I found a project to suit me and provided essential training for me in preparation for my trip. Being part of a workcamp really is a life-changing experience, oh, and it looks great on your CV! »
