- Introduction:
According to commonwealth Youth secretariat ‘A livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets (including both material and social resources) and activities required for a means of living. A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks and maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets both now and in the future, while not undermining the natural resource base.
In Tanzania and elsewhere around the world there is an increased alarm for alleviating poverty on young people hence leading to think on how the challenge could be addressed. Supporting young people to adopt sustainable livelihoods therefore requires a very realistic methodology. Young people can realise sustainable livelihood if their capacity is developed to meet their physical and social needs, while not significantly degrading the quantity or quality of natural resources on which they or others depend.
Mvomero is a community with a big population of young people in need of capacity development to realise desired livelihood. This include increased human capital (skills, knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, labour ability and good health), better social capital (relationships of trust and reciprocity, groups, and networks), improved physical capital (basic infrastructure), more financial capital, improved natural capital (forests, water, land, energy resources and minerals), reduced vulnerability and improved food security. This International volunteer project is expected to contribute to the existing strategies to realise sustainable livelihood in the community.
