Short-term (2 to 4 weeks) "social work" projects in Uganda

The project is situated in Kikooba village, 2km from Kituuma town at 74 km on Kampala - Hoima road North west of Kampala City.

- To construct a health worker's and Medium term volunteers' quarters at Kikooba UPA Branch
- To sensitize Kikooba community on primary health care and preventable diseases.
- Brick laying
- Mixing sand and cement
- Collecting bricks, mortar and water.

Climbing Kikooba hill will also be an interesting activity. A local market is also on Tuesday at Bukomero every two weeks.

The project expects 15 participants maximum with a composition of people from Uganda, regional and International volunteer organisations. Participants will work 6 hours daily from Monday to Friday. Weekends are for social interaction and/ or excursions unless if the official camp programme has an activitity.

Accommodation is basic. In most cases work campers will be sleeping in community halls or schools. Work campers should bring mosquito nets and bedding. Local food is prepared by the work campers on charcoal stoves or open fire. For more information about the specific camps and activities UPA provides an info sheet on request.

International participants are required to pay a fee of 250 Euros. The fee covers pick up from the airport or bus station upon arrival in Uganda, Orientation at the UPA guesthouse, local transport to and from the work camp, food and accommodation during the work camp. The fee also contributes to the running of activities taking place during the work camp and communication prior to the camp.

Empowering communities reduce avoidable or preventable diseases through maintaining clean environment.

Kakunyu village, Bukomero sub county in Kiboga District. Kiboga District is located in the central part of Uganda boarded by Luweero District in the northeast, Masindi in the northwest, Mubende district in the south and Kibale district in the southwest. Kakunyu lies 85km on Kampala-Hoima road.

Uganda Pioneers Association owns a 10 acre piece of land at Kakunyu village in Bukomero Sub County. The community around still live under poor sanitation environment, many miss clean latrines, have no proper garbage disposal systems and do not bother to maintain sanity in their homes.

This workcamp shall organise sanitation activities around several home as a demonstration for them to mind their health.
Besides sanitation activities, the camp shall also conduct activities around continuing on the construction of our Youth Training Centre.

- To promote family sanitation through physical cleaning.
- To promote awareness for a clean environment in families.
- To construct UPA youth training centre Hall.

- Community Sanitation.
- Cutting grass.
- Construction of drying racks.
- Digging of rubbish pits.
- Fitting Training centre with doors and windows.
- Plastering and flooring UPA youth and Community training Hall at Bukomero.
- Mixing concrete sand and cement.
- Carrying water and concrete, mortar.

International participants are required to pay a fee of 250 Euros. Reducing preventable diseases through improved community sanitation in Driwala Parish.

Located in the Greater North West Uganda (West Nile Region, Arua District) 360 miles, 500 kilometers from capital city Kampala to Arua Town, 6 hours Drive in a Bus and 8 hours drive in a car.

The work Camp Site is situated 3 km from Arua Town at Ezoova Village before British America Tobacco Company Offices.

The project is initiated by youths in the Peri-Urban setting of Driwala Parish, Pajulu Sub-county, Arua District, with the purpose of promoting clean sanitation, family hygiene and proper garbage disposal and removing of tall grass and stagnant water around 20 demonstration (model) homes in Driwala Parish. Many people in the community still die of Malaria and many other preventable diseases as a result of failure to practice good hygiene among the rural people in this parish and other villages in Uganda at large.
Aims.
To improve on the lives of people in Driwala parish through improving their hygiene.
To instil a culture of garbage management, separation and safe disposal practices.
To reduce prevalence of preventable diseases
To create awareness on safe and sustainable garbage disposal practices.
To sensitize the rural community on dangers of poor sanitation
To empower community members on maintaining their surrounding in order to ensure malaria free environment.

The project expects at most 25 International and local participants from different parts of the country. Participants will work for 6 hours daily from Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays are free days for washing clothes and cleaning work camp surroundings or sight seeing.

Climate/weather September lies in the rainy season and sometimes when it rains in Congo, chilly cold and windy spills that requires a good warm jacket or pull over. Rain season in Arua is wet, cool and humid some time mild.

Muslim Youth Against Aids (MYAHIV) is a community based organisation located in Busia district/municipality which was started in 2004 to bring together the youth to uplift their standards of living. This organisation has a big number of orphans, former street children, people living with HIV/AIDS, women and other vulnerable children.

Like other border post points, Busia is a transit town between the Uganda and Kenya. It has heavy traffic; it is busy, crowded with people and hence liable to poor sanitation. The place also is characterised by a mixture of tribes thus making it prone to different behaviours and practices thus exposing it to sanitation mismanagement and qualifying an exercise like this workcamp.

Aims of camp.
•To provide OVCs with best knowledge and support for better health.
•To improve on sanitation among HIV/AIDS infected and affected families and those of orphans
•To reduce preventable diseases through Health education
•To Promote primary health care
•To promote positive living to infected people
•To give counselling where necessary
•Cleaning water sources
•Collecting garbage in markets, park yards, customs and schools
•Sanitation competition through football, netball, Ludo, etc.
•Community sensitization/ mobilization

Weather in Busia is fragile and changes accordingly. The temperatures are warm between 20 – 30 degrees centigrade and the evenings are at times a bit chilly

KIDS League is located in Luwero Town The work camp shall take place at Luwero Boys’ Primary School located in Luwero Town, Luwero District. The Project site is located 2km before you reach Luwero Town, 60km North of Kampala on Kampala - Gulu Road.
Uganda Pioneers Association (UPA) has for 3 years initiated a mutual relationship with Luwero Kids League in efforts to mobilise youths to conduct a massive HIV/AIDS awareness campaign through sports.
Established in 2002, Luwero Kids League is a community based Organisation bringing together youth sports teams in 13 sub counties of Luwero District. The organisation is committed to use sports as a tool to interact, develop talents for the youth and as a platform to keep youths informed on vital health and life skills while on the other hand building a positive social behavioural change in youths.

HIV/AIDS in Uganda is still a problem accounting a bigger percentage of deaths in youths particularly girls from 18 to 25 years. Poverty and lack of information makes the situation in rural and semi urban areas like Luwero frightening It is therefore inevitable to involve the youth in the campaign against HIV/AIDS through behavioural change since they are less informed and socially dependant on their peers for knowledge on sexual behaviour.

Uganda Pioneers Association has therefore decided to partner with Luwero Kids League to engage school youth, out of school youth and the entire Luwero community in an interactive camp that will involve sports, drama, theatre, cultural exploration and Educative presentations on life skills, HIV/AIDS and adult reproductive health.

Participation

The project expects 30 participants maximum with a composition of people from UPA, Luwero Kids League, schools and International volunteers. Participants will work 6 hours daily from Monday to Friday. Morning hours will be for training sessions while the afternoons shall be for debates, open discussions and home visits. Games and Sports galas and art and Painting competitions will be on weekends.

Like most regions in Uganda people in this community always welcome visitors and always interested to talk/work with people from other cultural backgrounds. Volunteers on this project will have the opportunity to interact with mostly UPA members. Luwero Kids League and those from the community.
