Naweyo Primary School in Kachonga sub county, Butaleja District, Uganda.
Project background:
Kachonga Environmental protection Project (KEPP) is an initiative of Kachonga Development Association (KDA) a Community Based Organisation found in Kachonga sub-county located in Butaleja district in the Eastern region of Uganda. The overall goal of KDA is to promote interventions that ensure improved livelihoods within communities. The objective of KEPP is to enhance community involvement in environmental conservation through tree planting and fuel wood saving technologies. Environment degradation in Kachonga is visible as seen in the scanty tree cover and difficulty in getting tree products like firewood and poles. The land on which fruits used to grow wildly is now reclaimed for farming. Consequently, soil productivity has been drastically reduced resulting in food insecurity. This has led KDA to design a project to promote and support the community in Kachonga to adapt tree planting and fuel wood saving technologies. KDA and Uganda Pioneers Association (UPA) continue to pursue similar objects of promoting interventions that lead to improved living conditions, and there is a need to rise up and combine efforts to address the issues. It is with this conviction that KDA and UPA are organizing a community work camp.
Objectives:
To mobilise and sensitise people on environmental protection; to equip people with tree planting skills; to equip people with fuel wood saving skills and technologies; to encourage people to participate in self-help activities.

Expected outcomes:
It is expected that by the end of the workcamp:
500 people will have been sanitised and will appreciate the importance of environmental protection; 5,000 trees will have been planted; 100 fuel wood saving devices will have been built in homes; 200 fruit trees will have been planted in the homes of vulnerable children.

FURTHER CONSTRUCTION OF BUWEMBE SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL, HIV/AIDS AWARENESS AND ENVIROMENTAL CONSERVATION.
LOCATION :
THE PROJECT IS LOCATED IN BUWEMBE VILLAGE, BULUMBI SUB-COUNTY, BULUMBI COUNTY, BUSIA DISTRICT APPROXIMATELY 230 KMS EAST OF KAMPALA AND 25 KMS FROM THE UGANDA-KENYA BORDER.
PARTICIPATION FEE:
EURO 200
UVDA was invited to Buwembe to help in the construction of that school which was in a very bad state. Since them, several international work camps have been organized and the school has a number of class room from senior 1 to senior 6. Due to universal primary education in Uganda, the number of students has tremendously increased in that some students attend their lessons under trees.
It is against this background that UVDA has been again invited this year 2009 to help in the construction of 2 classroom Block of Buwembe senior secondary school. Our observations during our stay in that area are similar to those of UVDA CODE STV 06/09. It is possible to visit Mt. Elgon and Sipi falls from Buwembe work camp and you will be able to see the Baboons at Busitema forest on your way to the project. People are very nice and you will all be accommodated at the project site.
Project:
Camp sites may change due to unforeseen circumstances BUT the Dates will not change.
It is very important that Volunteers arrive in the country earlier, before the workcamp commences for orientation purposes which takes place two days before the camp.
It is very important that all participating volunteers report to UVDA office FIRST for briefing and orientation before traveling to the project. Orientation fee is 20 euro per individual. You are expected to exhibit good behavior in the community, respect the Camp leader and one another and show commitment to the project.
Foreign Volunteers can be picked from any port of entry e.g. airport, bus station etc. by our members to reasonable cheap and safe accommodation once we are requested to do so and informed in time. It costs about EURO 30 for a special car hire from the airport to Kampala in case a Volunteer arrive at night or after 6:00 PM. It is cheaper by public means of transport like omnibus (Matatu) if a volunteer arrives during day time before 6:00 PM.
« The most beautiful thing about volunteering obviously is the people you meet… the helpfulness the understanding…there is always someone who puts a plate of food in front of you if you say you are not hungry and not in the mood, or gives you a pep talk or simply a hug. »
