Kakunyu village, Bukomero sub-county in Kiboga District. Kiboga District is located in the central part of Uganda bordered by Luweero District in the north east, Masindi in the northwest, Mubende district in the south and Kibale district in the southwest.
Project background:
Uganda Pioneers Association owns a 10 acre piece of land at Kakunyu village in Bukomero Sub County on which it has piloted several projects. UPA decided to begin a campaign to plant trees on more than half of this land. In 2008 alone over 500 trees were planted. In 2009 we plan to double this number and simultaneously grow food crops in the same area. It is UPA's hope that this project will become an exemplary project for Bukomero in the future and a distribution centre for tree seedlings for the community.
Objectives:
To promote environment conservation through tree planting; to promote agro forestry through intercropping commercial trees with food crops; to promote the use of organic manure for improved agriculture and increased production.
Activities:
Environment Conservation:
- planting 2 acres of different species of trees' preparing 2 tree nursery beds; tree potting raising tree nursery shades.
Agriculture:
- Making composite manure pits; carrying organic manure to plants/gardens; planting maize and vegetables; weeding.
Cultural and educational visits:
A visit to Katera historical stones; climbing Katera Hill; the Bukomero local market is held twice a month on Tuesdays and is worth experiencing. Cultural Nights will be organised on different evenings for the different countries represented at the work camp.
Expected outcomes:
It is expected that by the end of the work camp:
1000 trees will have been planted, 2000 tree seedlings will have been potted, 2 nursery beds will have been constructed, 2 acres of maize will have been planted, 2 manure composite pits will have been prepared.
Beneficiaries:
UPA members, international work camp participants, the local community, local volunteers
Host community:
The people found in central Uganda are multi-tribal with the majority population being Baganda. The major language spoken is Luganda though many people also speak English.
Accommodation:
Accommodation will be in a UPA guest room on the project. Participants will be required to bring their own sleeping bags and mats. The camp site has simple bathrooms with no showers and participants will wash using a cup and bucket. The camp sites have latrines and not flushing toilets. A simple cooking shelter will be used as a kitchen.
Project:
Participants are advised to arrive two days before the project begins.
Hosting fees:
International volunteers are required to pay €250 on arrival. The fee covers pick up in the airport or bus station upon arrival in Uganda, orientation at the UPA guesthouse, local transport to and from the work camp and food and accommodation during the work camp. The fee also contributes to the running of activities during the workcamp and communication costs prior to the workcamp.
« I can say that the best things about the workcamp and this whole experience were the chance of making a real difference to the lives of very needy children. This is an extremely valuable project where volunteers can have a massive impact. Also the possibility of learning a huge amount about a country so different from our own. I learnt ten times as much by carrying out a workcamp than I would ever do backpacking. »
