Mid-term (1 to 6 months) "work with children/teenagers" projects in Tanzania

Volunteers can apply any time provided that there is a free placement; however the minimum duration is one month and maximum three months.

The Chamazi Orphanage center is a registered Trust, not for profit organisation established by the local community members to care for children who have lost their parents. The center provides food and accommodation for the children from the age of zero to eighteen, and supports them with other needs such as education, health care, etc. The orphanage has about one hundred children supported by staff who are living in the same compound.

The center is located in Chamazi area, Temeke District, about 25km from the center of Dar es Salaam. The community was once rural but now is a fast growing urban center. The urbanization process has made this community very diverse in terms of culture since people of different tribes and religions are found in the community. There are a couple of mosques and churches from various denominations. Most people are employed and work in town, or own small businesses, agriculture, etc.

Volunteers will assist in various activities of the center including feeding children, washing and cleaning, and organizing sports and games. Other activities include various administrative duties, marketing, fundraising, shopping, etc.

Volunteers wishing to be picked up at the airport will have to inform UVIKUTA's office in advance, and those who arrive earlier can stay at UVIKIUTA center located outside the city center. There will be an extra cost to cover meals and accommodation.

Female or male over the age of 18. No special skills are required, but a volunteer should be one who loves children and hard work, and who is independent, flexible, and a team player.

Volunteers will be working for 6 hours a day, five days per week. Volunteers will not work on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Shared accommodation with other volunteers at the Youth Center.

Food will be provided at the Youth Center.

Volunteers will pay a participation fee of €250 per month and €50 for each extra week. The fee will cover the cost of food and lodging plus administration of the program.

Lole Day Care and Nursery School is a project under Lole Parish of the Evangelical Lutheran church. It provides early childhood education for the children in the area to prepare them to join primary schools. Kids who attend this school are expected to gain Spiritual growth, maturity, positive social development, enhanced social skills, good character formation, improved academic performance, and confidence.

Lole-Marera is one of the villages lying under the slope of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. The community is rural and the inhabitants are mostly farmers. The main crops are coffee, bananas, maize, and various fruits. Being close to the mountain, the area is green throughout the year. The place is very rich due to its culture, and there is a lot to see in terms of culture and nature. About 1km from the school is Kilimanjaro National Park. The village is located about 50km from Moshi Municipality which is the closest big town and the capital of the Region.

Volunteers will be assisting existing teachers on various tasks of the school which include teaching English language, songs, arts and crafts, reading and writing, sports and games, making porridge/food for the children and general cleaning for the school surrounding.

A female or male, with a minimum age of 18, with interest in working with children. A person who is independent and able to work with less supervision.

The school runs for at least six hours (morning) everyday, Monday to Friday. Saturday, Sunday and Public holidays the school is closed. Volunteers who will be working in the area will be close to most tourist attraction in Tanzania, including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro National Parks, among others.

Volunteers will be hosted in host families. Be prepared to share room with other volunteers.

A sport for community action is a project established by UVIKIUTA with the aim of providing the opportunity for children and young Women and men in the surrounding communities to gain various skills and to become aware of development issues affecting them. The project sees sport as an ideal mechanism to engage children and youth. In this project, sport is defined as traditional games, soccer, basket ball, volleyball, dance, etc. Sport is an enabler and time occupier for otherwise idle young people, and it also provides extra activities for children after school hours to develop physically. The project uses the value of sports as a vehicle for leadership, development, empowerment, equalizing gender inequalities, improving educational success, enhancing economic opportunities, and social inclusion of marginalized groups such as girls, disabled persons and youth. These values include team work, respect, decision making, volunteerism, integrity, self esteem, conflict management, and communication skills as vital life skills.

The project is located within UVIKIUTA compound. Inhabitants of the local community are mostly petty traders, farmers, and a large portion of the population is unemployed. The community is one of the suburbs of Temeke Municipality, and is located about 24km from the center of Dar es Salaam. It is a very diverse community with mixed culture and attractions, offered by the UVIKIUTA Eco Village.

Organizing and teaching of various sports, games, songs and dances to the groups of children and young people. Children here are defined as those from the age of 6-15 while young people will be the older ones.

Minimum age of 18 years-old, female or male. Volunteers are expected to be independent and able to work with less supervision and sometimes pressure. No special skills are required, but volunteers should have an interest in sports and in working with young people and children. There will be groups of up to 20 young people and children to be organized each day.

Volunteers will be working for 3 hours each afternoon, from Monday to Friday, while on Saturdays they will be working for 8 hours. Sundays and public holidays volunteers will have free time.

Volunteers will be hosted at the youth hostel, but there is the possibility of staying with host families.
