BACKGROUND CREDO CHILDREN HOME The Credo Children’s Centre- Kiaragana is a charitable children’s institution dedicated to protection and care mainly to children from the streets, orphaned and those who are vulnerable and who find themselves in situations that put their lives and their future at risk. The institution endeavours to facilitate rehabilitation through provision of education, care and protection in a humane and loving environment in which the children under its care can thrive to become mature and responsible adults. This is made possible through the support of its parent organization THE CREDO FOUNDATION in conjunction with donors, sponsors, volunteers and well wishers. The institution is the brain child of the chairman of CREDO FOUNDATION Mtumishi, Augustine Njeru Kathangu. His vision to provide an alternative life for the street children and others, who have been deprived of their basic rights, was realized in 1996 when the land owners of the old Kiaragana market agreed to lease the plots and through a work camp organized by Mr. Kathangu himself involving local and international volunteers, and the centre started. The owners of the said old market plots later agreed to sell the land to the Credo-Foundation. Since then the home has managed to change the lives of many children. The institution is run by a committee and a board of trustees.

THE COMMUNITY BACKGROUND OF EBUSAKAMI COMMUNITY DRIVEN GROUP:
The community is located along the equator line. It consists of Luhya speaking people. Poverty levels are high due unemployment with high rate of school drop outs due to early pregnancy and drug abuse. Maseno University which is a centre of excellence in training and research around the world is located astride the equator. The inhabitants are agriculturalists and grow maize, beans, and groundnuts for food crop. The enormous challenges facing the community may be stated as:•High rate of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections. •Cheap Child labour, that translates to Child abuse {Children used to supplement obligations} •High poverty levels that is the bottom line of all the socio-economic challenges. •High unemployment rate among the Youth. •High rate of drug and substance abuse.
THEME - COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT AND POVERTY REDUCTION:
High poverty levels characterize the region and this is exacerbated by internal and external factors as enumerated below.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR EMUHAYA DISTRICT:
Emuhaya district which has been curved off Vihiga district of Western Province covers an area of 173.2 Sq. Km. The district currently consists of one political constituency, Emuhaya constituency. The current Member of Parliament is Dr. Wilbur K. Ottichilo. It is divided into two divisions of Luanda and Emuhaya and eight administrative locations namely; South Bunyore, South-West Bunyore, West Bunyore, Central Bunyore, North Bunyore, North-East Bunyore, East Bunyore and Wekhomo. The people of Emuhaya were among the first to be exposed to education during the missionary activities in Kenya when the first mission station was established at Kima (In 1905). Since then, Emuhaya has over 115 pre-primary schools, 92 primary schools and 26 secondary schools.
INFORMATION ON HIV/AIDS SCOURGE:
According to the National Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) 2001 report, 65% of the people of Kenya live below the poverty line. The approximate statistics for poverty levels are as follows: 53% rural poor, 52% are overall national food poor, who are unable to afford a daily 2250 calories, 51% are rural food poor while 38% are urban food poor. In Emuhaya, over 65% live below poverty line and are food poor. The problem of poverty is further compounded by rampant HIV/AIDS, poor health facilities and infrastructure, declining education and literacy levels, breakdown in social and cultural structures, insecurity, declining land productivity, poor administrative management among others. Malaria, acute respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea, skin diseases, intestinal worms, ear and eye infections and AIDS are the common diseases found among the people of Emuhaya. In addition, cases of malnutrition have also been reported. Mechanisms of coping up with the management and control of the diseases and other health related problems are lacking. A well organised health system, will, therefore, need to be in place for the needs of the people. The HIV/AIDS scourge has affected the people of this new district just like it has for the rest of Kenya. Currently available figures indicate that 5.1% of the population of Emuhaya district is infected with HIV. This translates to 10, 074 as the number of people living with AIDS (PLWAS). Based on these figures, a number of service delivery points have been established in various health facilities in the district. It is worth noting that by June 2008, the total number of people on antiretroviral therapy (ART) stood as 2, 446 (24.3 % of those eligible). There is therefore a need to scale up ART activities to cover large numbers as is elsewhere in Kenya.

« I can say that the best things about the workcamp and this whole experience were the chance of making a real difference to the lives of very needy children. This is an extremely valuable project where volunteers can have a massive impact. Also the possibility of learning a huge amount about a country so different from our own. I learnt ten times as much by carrying out a workcamp than I would ever do backpacking. »
