It is a one-streamed mixed primary school. It is thus an old educational institution which without doubt, has for decades positively contributed to the general development of the people of this community and beyond. St Augustine children learning center is an initiative that work closely with vulnerable children from the slummy Kihunguro & Gitambaya area of Ruiru Town. The initiative was started in the year 2003 by a registered self-help group by the Ministry of social services. The formation of the group was aimed at creating HIV awareness and social welfare where we assisted each other. Through our activities in different schools and social gathering we realized we were surrounded with many wanting children who happened to hail from families affected with HIV or who come from extremely poor families many belonging to single and young parents thus rendering the children more vulnerable . These children idled around, had no school uniforms and malnourished. Such children lacked proper support and psycho- social support was needed. St Augustine therefore aimed at breaking the trend of vulnerability through provision of education to such children and more to these, the psychosocial support in order to raise the self-esteem of such children; we focus on education, nutrition, talent development and self-esteem of such vulnerable children. St. Augustine Children Education Centre is therefore a driving force toward breaking the poverty cycle, a vehicle toward millennium development goals, HIV/Aids mitigation and networking through provision of quality and holistic education to vulnerable children in a participatory approach and also to lead us toward the Kenya vision 2030.

« I can say that the best things about the workcamp and this whole experience were the chance of making a real difference to the lives of very needy children. This is an extremely valuable project where volunteers can have a massive impact. Also the possibility of learning a huge amount about a country so different from our own. I learnt ten times as much by carrying out a workcamp than I would ever do backpacking. »
