Volunteers will actively occupy themselves with the completion of a kindergarten classroom block and a septic tank intended for the use of school children. The nursery school is currently being run, although the structure is uncompleted. The project is an initiative of the community's representative on the Local Council supported by the community folks. Indeed, birth to this project is in a bid to give adequate and sound foundation to the kids before they enter the next level of the educational ranking. The responsibilities to face volunteers will include excavation of a manhole, plastering, flooring, carting of building materials to project site etc. During the first week of the camping period, volunteers will be privileged sufficiently to fully participate in a cultural festival of the people. The festival is popularly known as Akwambo Festival. Every first Sunday in the month of August in each year is set aside for the observation of week-long festivities. Customarily, as part of the occasion, certain rituals will be performed which will include paying homage to ancestral god in a shrine located at periphery of the town, clearing of ancestral historical paths/routes believed to be used by their forefathers during their migration journey to the present settlement. Volunteers will for the duration of the merriment actively get involve in some social activities such as general cleaning exercise, hygienic/sanitation programmes to herald the festivities. They will conceivably be invited to join hand with the people in the clearing of the ancestral paths/routes which shall give them the opportunity to know deeply the Cultural Heritage of the community. In fact, this project will be one of the most exciting moments during this year's summer workcamps programs.
Study part:
An extra fee of 200 Euro will need to be paid on arrival. This will cover your food and accommodation for the duration of the project as well as go towards VOLU's administration costs.
Accomodation:
Volunteers will be accommodated in the dormitories of Mando Senior High School at walking distance to project site. Sleeping on Bed bunks and mattresses will be made possible for all volunteers and they will divide up in rooms; volunteers advised to come along with sleeping bags, repellants and Mosquito nets. Food ingredient will also be provided; every camper is expected to share in the cooking and preparation of meals for the camp. Electricity and Water shall uninterruptedly be in full supply.
Location:
Mando is a small town of little over 2,350 inhabitants. It is located in the administration district of Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam of the Central Region. This district is composed of three different traditional areas with Ajumako as the capital.
Terminal:
Volunteers coming from overseas countries would be picked up on arrival at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra. In this connection, all participating volunteers are advised to communicate in comprehensible details travel arrangements with us ahead of time. Volunteers would be accommodated at VOLU Hostels located in Accra before and after the project at no cost
