This project consists of a volunteer house with bunk beds and a meeting room with a kitchen and toilet (outside) and a house for the staff being built. The Centre works with and for the local community and for young people across Burundi with meetings, discussions, help with agriculture and youth education.
WORK:
This will include helping with construction (carrying water, mixing cement, bricklaying), agriculture (weeding, planting, clearing the ground), teaching English. Work will be 6 hours per day Monday to Friday.
LOCATION:
MBUYE is a large village 110 kms from the capital, Bujumbura. It was the scene of killings and displacement during the crisis of 1993. There is no obvious tension today but ABSV works for lasting reconciliation. Mbuye has a large Catholic church and is well known for the production of cheese. Muramvya Province was the home of the King of Burundi up until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1966.
ORIENTATION:
On arrival volunteers will spend a day or two at ABSV's base in Buterere, a suburb of Bujumbura not far from the airport.
FREE TIME:
Volunteers will be able to visit Gitega (Burundi's second "city"), Kibimba School and hospital or Bujumbura during the weekends. From Bujumbura it is possible to spend time on the shore of Lake Tanganyika and visit the hippos and crocodiles in the small Rusizi National Park.
PARTICIPATION FEE:
ABSV asks volunteers to pay a fee of 300 Euros to cover accommodation, food, tools, transport from and to the airport and from Bujumbura to Mbuye and back at the start and end of the camp. This also includes a solidarity payment to ABSV which is a small association operating in one of the world's poorest countries. (This fee does not cover travel insurance, visa, drinks, visits during weekends or staying on after the camp).
NB:
ABSV welcomes volunteers who would like to stay longer on the project, in fact to serve as a medium term volunteer for three months or longer or to come on dates not shown above. There are elections in June and it was thought best to avoid that month. The fees would be pro rata on the basis of €300/month.
ABSV can also arrange a one week course in the Kirundi language on arrival for an additional €50.

« The outside world did not interfere, because it seemed so distant, and so we spent our spare time getting to know each other and learning about each other countries', languages and cultures. Everyone was completely relaxed. This simply would not have been possible on any other type of holiday. VAP enabled me to have a truly memorable experience. »
